Client Pain Points & Bottlenecks
Why does the same heat transfer film perform flawlessly on one plastic container but peel off on another?
Heat transfer film functions as a carrier, where final adhesion relies on the thermal bond between the transfer adhesive and the plastic substrate. In industrial packaging, substrate variability (polymer type, surface energy, mold release agents) and inconsistent processing conditions frequently cause edge lifting or complete delamination. Standard films, lacking specific chemical affinity, will perform well on one line but fail on another.
To ensure maximum compatibility before mass production, we provide free small test kits. You can test the bond strength, scratch resistance, and edge definition directly on your specific plastic containers to confirm a perfect match.

Why are the heat transfer graphics flaking or peeling off easily from the plastic?
Most plastic pails are made of Polypropylene (PP) or Polyethylene (PE), which are non-polar materials with naturally low surface tension (<34 dynes/cm). At this level, the thermal adhesive cannot form a mechanical or chemical bond with the plastic surface.
Solution:
•Apply Surface Pre-treatment: Use Flame Treatment or Corona Treatment on the printing area immediately before stamping. This oxidizes the plastic surface and creates polar active groups.
•Target Dyne Level: Ensure the surface tension reaches at least 38-42 dynes/cm.
•Quality Control: Test the treated pails regularly using a Dyne test pen. If the ink breaks into droplets, the surface tension is too low and needs re-treatment.
Injection molding factories often use silicone-based release agents or slip additives to help push the pails out of the mold. These compounds migrate to the surface and act as an invisible non-stick barrier.
Solution:
•Wipe the Printing Zone: Clean the outer surface of the pails using Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or specialized plastic degreasers before transferring.
•Adjust Injection Molding: Instruct your mold shop/supplier to switch to silicone-free release agents or reduce internal slip additives in the raw plastic resin.
Heat transfer release films are not universal. A film designed for ABS or PVC uses an adhesive layer with a different melting point and chemical polarity than one formulated for PP or PE.
Solution:
•Verify Film Specification: Confirm with your film supplier that you are using a PP-dedicated (or PE-dedicated) heat transfer film.
•Check Storage Conditions: Expired or damp transfer film can lose adhesive effectiveness. Keep film rolls stored in a cool, dry room (15°C-25°C, <60% RH) in sealed plastic wrapping.
If the thermal parameters are off, the hot-melt glue will either fail to activate (under-heated) or get scorched/over-thinned (over-heated).
•Temperature:
Check Actual Surface Temp: Use an infrared temperature gun to measure the actual temperature of the silicone roller (do not rely solely on the machine's digital display).
Adjustment: Increase the temperature in 5°C increments until the adhesive fully melts into the plastic surface (typically 150°C~210°C depending on roller speed).
•Pressure:
Adjustment: Maintain pneumatic/hydraulic stamping pressure at 3-6 bar. Insufficient pressure prevents the glue from penetrating the plastic's microscopic grain.
•Speed / Dwell Time:
Adjustment: Slow down the stamping speed slightly if the adhesive is not receiving enough heat during contact.
Plastic pails are hollow and flexible. When the heavy roller presses on the outside, a weak wall will flex inward, causing a sudden drop in actual stamping pressure.
Solution:
• Install Precision Mandrel: Use a rigid metal or hard epoxy internal support jig that perfectly matches the inner contour and taper angle of the pail.
•Inspect for Wear: Ensure the internal support doesn't wobble or deform under pressure during rotation.
1. Test Dyne Level: Is it ≥38 dynes/cm?
No → Flame/Corona treat the surface.
Yes → Move to step 2.
2. Clean Surface: Wipe pail with IPA. Does adhesion improve?
Yes → Mold release agent present. Change molding parameters or clean pails.
No → Move to step 3.
3. Verify Film: Is the film formulated specifically for PP/PE?
No → Switch to PP-compatible transfer film.
Yes → Move to step 4.
4. Calibrate Parameters: Increase roller temperature by 5~10°C and check pressure/internal support rigidity.
DTF pain points
Why is there such a big price gap among DTF films?
Low-cost 3-in-1 coated DTF films apply the ink-absorbing layer, release layer and anti-static layer in a single coating pass. However, they suffer from poor batch-to-batch stability. High-quality DTF films adopt multi-pass layered coating, with each functional layer applied separately one by one. This delivers much more consistent color fastness and wash resistance. We recommend customers choose DTF films manufactured with multi-coating processes for superior stability.
Another key difference is single-sided vs double-sided film. Double-sided DTF film has an extra anti-slip and anti-static coating on the backside. It ensures smoother film feeding during printing and prevents print misalignment.

Why is DTF film prone to moisture absorption?
When ambient humidity exceeds 65%, the film is likely to suffer from oil and water bleeding issues.
At Weshares, we have adopted solutions to avoid this problem. We add desiccants inside the packaging. Each roll of DTF film is wrapped with an OPP film sleeve before being packed into cartons.
If customers have leftover DTF film after printing, we recommend putting the film back into the original OPP bag and storing it inside the carton properly for future use.

DTF Film Oil Bleeding & Water Seepage Causes and Professional Solutions
To better understand the common defects of DTF transfer film, we first introduce its complete structure. DTF film consists of two core parts: the DTF printed design layer and the base print film section.
The base print film is composed of four functional layers:
1. Ink receptive coating
2. Release layer
3. PET film substrate
4. Back coating
The top transfer section, which is the printed design part, includes three layers:
1. Color ink layer
2. White ink layer
3. Adhesive powder layer

After printing and oven drying, the white ink and color ink will solidify and form a complete ink film layer.
It is important to note that both white ink and color ink are water-based materials, while the adhesive powder layer is made of oil-based resin. The powder layer can quickly form a tight film during heat pressing. However, water-based ink requires sufficient drying time to remove internal moisture completely.
Most oil bleeding and water seepage issues during heat transfer are caused by incomplete drying of the printed ink layer. High humidity environment will greatly increase the probability of such defective problems.
We have three professional and effective solutions to avoid DTF film oil bleeding and water seepage:
First, fully shake the ink evenly before printing. This prevents ink sedimentation and ink delamination, ensuring stable ink composition and consistent printing performance.
Second, properly adjust the drying equipment settings. Moderately increase the oven temperature and preheat the drying system in advance to ensure stable and sufficient drying efficiency.
Third, control the working environment humidity. Especially on rainy and humid days, indoor dehumidification treatment is required. Keeping a dry production environment is essential for perfect DTF transfer results.
With standardized operation and strict humidity control, our DTF transfer film can effectively avoid blistering, oil bleeding and water seepage, delivering stable and high-quality transfer performance for all garment printing applications.

How long is the shelf life of DTF transfer film?
It can be divided into two parts.
First, for unprinted DTF transfer film: the shelf life is 12 to 24 months under proper storage conditions.
Second, for printed DTF transfer film: For the patterns after printing, powder application and drying, best results are achieved when used within one month.
It can be stored for up to 6 months under proper storage conditions. Exposure to humidity or direct sunlight will cause the transfer to fail immediately.
After heat pressed onto garments, premium DTF transfers can withstand 75 to 100 washes under ideal conditions.
It can endure 50~70 washes with regular warm water cleaning.
By contrast, if you use low-quality consumable DTF film, the printed patterns may crack after only 10 to 30 washes.
High temperature and humid surroundings will greatly shorten the shelf life, easily triggering oil bleeding and water seepage. We recommend sealing the unused film in the original OPP packaging with desiccants for storage.
